The more professional you become, the harder it is to hear your own voice.

Why is it easy to answer a client brief, yet hard to create for yourself? Strip away external noise and reclaim the starting point of your craft.
The more professional you become, the harder it is to hear your own creative voice. Stop meeting external expectations and reclaim your original impulse.
In a business meeting, you understand exactly what is demanded.
The words the client uses.
The reference materials they show.
The phrases they repeat throughout the conversation.
Even when it is not spoken aloud, you read what they value and what they want to avoid.
There is a budget.
There is a deadline.
There is a specific audience to reach.
Within those constraints, you figure out the most appropriate form.
What will make them happy?
What kind of expression will get the message across?
How much should be new, and how much should remain familiar?
The more experience you gain, the faster you find those answers.
Yet, the moment you try to create something for yourself, you suddenly lose your way.
What do you want to make?
Why do you want to make it?
What is the one thing you cannot stop yourself from creating, even if no one is asking for it?
For a client's brief, you can present multiple proposals.
For your own craft, you cannot find a single answer.
For a long time, I thought I simply lacked ideas.
Look at more art.
Learn new techniques.
Travel to unfamiliar places.
I believed that if I increased my stimulation, I would eventually find what I wanted to create.
Thinking that way, I absorbed even more from the outside.
Yet, the more knowledge and options I gained, the less I understood where I wanted to go.
Nothing was missing.
There were simply too many voices already inside my head.
To work as a professional is to think from the perspective of others.
What is required?
How will it be received?
What kind of result is needed?
As you keep answering those questions, the expectations of others begin to surface before your own senses do.
The instant you come up with an idea, you wonder who will demand it.
The instant something moves your heart, you wonder if it will succeed as a product.
You try to shape a formless sensation into something that can be evaluated.
It is too hard to explain.
It does not fit who I am supposed to be right now.
It will not lead to business.
Before anyone else can reject it, you reject it yourself.
That judgment is fast.
You already know what is difficult and what is hard to get praised for.
Because of that knowledge, your small impulses disappear before they ever become a work of art.
I used to believe that gaining experience would make my own voice clearer.
In reality, it simply increased the number of voices I could hear.
The voice of the client.
The voice of the audience.
The voice of the market.
The voice of those who praised me in the past.
The voice of who I am supposed to be.
Those voices are backed by experience and results.
Therefore, you learn to trust them more than your own senses.
What is correct, rather than what you feel.
What you should make, rather than what you want to make.
Your ability to meet the expectations of others grows sharper.
Your ability to create something no one is asking for stops being used.
Your own voice is not lost.
You have simply lost sight of the path back to it.
What you need is the space before external judgment begins.
Will this be useful?
Who will this reach?
Does this fit my brand?
Before asking those questions, look at what actually moved your heart.
Even if you cannot explain it, even if it makes no sense, do not rush to erase it.
It is not yet a work of art, nor is it an idea.
It is simply a reaction that occurred inside you.
That is where your craft begins.
The more professional you become, the more voices you hear.
Therefore, before you answer to any other voice, secure the time to return to your own senses.
What moved my heart just now?
Before explaining it to anyone.
Before shaping it into a form to be evaluated.
Receive that reaction yourself first.
Your own voice is not lost.
Other voices are simply answering first.
Before you begin your own work, whose voice are you listening to?
