Craft Exists Beyond the Time You Spend Creating.

Do not erase your empty time. Creativity requires silence before acquiring a form. Accept the version of you who cannot produce anything today.

Empty time is not wasted time. Do not demand immediate results from your silence. Craft includes the moments when you cannot create anything.

When you fail to create anything for a day, you often feel you wasted that time. You produced no words and no forms. You generated no new ideas, and you possess no visible results. The more you work as a professional creator, the harder it becomes to accept such time.

What did you build? How much progress did you achieve? What did you complete?

You define craft solely as the time producing results, and you exclude everything else from the boundaries of your work.

Before a piece of work appears, an invisible time exists. The time preserving sensations you cannot yet articulate. The time feeling attracted to something without knowing the reason. Even when progress remains invisible, something continues to move inside you. Craft does not happen solely while your hands move.

When you cannot find an answer, you try to consume more information. You study references, multiply your thoughts, and expand your choices. However, massive amounts of information already accumulate and bury your own senses.

At that moment, you do not need a new answer. You need to halt your movement.

Do not attempt to discover anything. Do not advance toward a conclusion. Keep the unknown exactly as it is.

Do not utilize empty time for the sake of future results.

Rest improves productivity. Stillness generates new ideas. Silence allows you to hear your own voice.

The instant you adopt that mindset, the empty space becomes work once more.

What did you gain? Did it benefit your craft? Was it a meaningful time?

 During empty time, nothing might happen. You might fail to find an answer. Still, you do not need to justify that time with future results.

A creator exists for more than just producing artwork.

Feeling. Hesitating. Keeping things unknown. Recognizing you cannot create right now. Avoiding thoughts about your craft.

Those moments also constitute the time of a creator.

Creativity is not an infinite resource you can extract from yourself endlessly. You require time to receive a sensation and allow it to rest inside you before it acquires a form.

Before you start creating, a time of zero production exists. During your creation, a time of zero progress exists. After completing a piece, a time where you cannot advance exists.

Do not rush to fill those blank spaces. Do not decide right now whether they will benefit your next work.

Craft encompasses more than completed artwork.

The version of you who cannot create. The version of you who remains unsure. The version of you who remains stopped.

Craft means accompanying those versions of yourself, instead of rejecting them.

 Empty time does not mean your craft stopped. It is the time necessary to protect your craft from becoming mere results.
