The Original Impulse is Not an Idea.
Aug 02, 2026
Stop turning every feeling into a concrete idea right away. Learn why your Original Impulse needs time to breathe before it becomes a project.
Do you rush to turn your feelings into clear ideas? Discover why protecting your formless Original Impulse is the true starting point of creation.
When we think about creation, we look for ideas. What to make. What to convey. What form it should take.
Ideas have a certain level of clarity. They can be put into words. They can be explained to others. You can figure out how to make them happen.
But at the very beginning of creation, what exists is not even an idea yet. You don't know what to make. There is no meaning, no purpose, and no format. Only your feelings are moving.
I call this first movement the "Original Impulse."
The Original Impulse is not a finished thought. It is not the theme of a project, nor is it a message to deliver. You don't know why, but it stays on your mind. You start to feel a sense of friction with what you’ve been doing. At that stage, you don't know what it means. Even so, something has begun inside you.
We try to instantly turn that movement into a clear idea. What will this become? What format makes it work? Who will it reach? Does it align with my current direction? We rush to give shape to a vague sensation.
When we do that, only the parts that are easy to explain are left behind. The things that haven't yet become words are cut away because they are too hard to handle. You get a neatly organized idea. But the starting point—why you are making it—falls away.
The Original Impulse does not always appear as a burning passion. It can be a resistance to doing things the way you always have. A feeling of emptiness, even when you are being praised. It’s not just the urge to start something; it can also be the feeling of wanting to end something. The beginning of creation is not always positive or easy to understand.
That is why you don't need to define its meaning right away. First, just acknowledge that something is happening inside you.
The Original Impulse is not a command you have to obey. You don't need to turn everything you feel into a piece of work.
Don't decide what it is yet. Don't deny it. Don't justify it. Don't judge it.
Why did I react to this? What made me stop here? Don't rush to find an answer. Leave time for that movement to simply exist.
Once production begins, the work will change. You might let go of the shape you originally had in mind and move toward a different question. What you must protect is not the initial shape. It is the initial relationship between you and the work. That is where the reason the work started lives.
The Original Impulse is the first movement that shows where your creation is trying to begin.
