Deciding what to make seems like the beginning of creation.

Taking a photograph. Writing a song. Writing a text. Making a video. 

But even if you are making the exact same thing, the starting point is not always the same. Creating because someone asked you to. Creating because you sense it will be praised. Creating to replicate a past success. Creating to explore something that lingered inside you. 

Even if the final works look identical from the outside, the choices you make during the process change depending on where you started. 

The starting point of creation is not the subject matter of the work. Even when dealing with personal experiences, you might only be thinking about how others will see them. Talking about yourself is very different from creating from within yourself. 

The core issue is not what you are working on. It is what drives your very first decision. 

When creation starts from the outside, the answers exist before the work does. What is required? How should it be presented? What fits the current trends? What should I make to maintain my position? You work backward from those answers to construct the piece. 

If every creative act begins there, the feelings that haven't yet become words are never even considered. You only sharpen your ability to answer external questions, while losing sight of the questions you yourself want to ask. 

To create from within means treating your own internal reactions as the first fact of the creative process. What drew me in? What felt slightly off? What is lingering without an explanation? 

That reaction doesn't need to have a clear shape yet. You don't need to be able to explain its meaning. Instead of deciding what you should make, observe what is beginning inside you. 

Where you create from also reveals itself in the middle of the process. Whether to keep a detail or cut it. Whether to change the direction of the work. Whether to accept someone's feedback. Where do those decisions come from? 

Are you making a choice because the work itself is evolving? Or are you choosing it out of fear of not being understood? Are you letting an idea go because your own understanding has deepened? Or are you reverting to your old style because you fear stepping away from your past identity? Observe not just what you choose, but where that choice comes from. 

Sometimes, even while making the work, you are already looking at it from the audience's perspective. How does it look? How will it be received? How much value does it have? You switch to the evaluator's seat before even acknowledging your own reaction. 

In that state, you can effectively manage the work. But you will never be moved by the work itself. Creation stops being an act of approaching the unknown, and becomes the mere act of polishing answers you already know. 

During the process, the shape of the work will change. The subject changes. The structure changes. You might even abandon your original idea. 

What you must protect is not the shape you initially pictured. It is your first relationship with the work—the spark that started moving you. If you lose that starting point, the work isn't evolving; it is merely being adjusted to fit the outside world. 

The question of what to make can be answered by the outside world. What is needed. What is getting attention. What you are good at. What is feasible. 

But the question of where you create from can only be answered by you. Are you starting from expectations? Are you starting from fear? Are you starting to protect your past self? Or are you starting from a genuine reaction inside you? 

Before thinking about what to make, observe where you are trying to create from. 

Reclaiming the act of creation for yourself does not mean changing the content of your work. It means bringing the starting point of creation back inside yourself.
