The Art of Dropping the Mask — and wanting what you actually want.

The Art of Dropping the Mask.

You are wearing a mask. It wasn't built from who you truly wanted to be; it was built from what people around you would accept. You've worn it so long that it now feels like your own skin.

Look at what's underneath it. The thing you truly wanted to do with your life is still there. Untouched. The work you were really capable of making, the kind that would make you a little embarrassed, was never made. Beneath both of these is your real self, buried under a career built out of other people's approval. Not your own desire.

You want to say what you actually think, but you don't. You want to make the thing that scares you, but you don't. You want to leave the place you've outgrown, but you don't. You want to be seen as you really are, but you don't let yourself be. That's not just a bad week. That's the system running underneath everything you do.

The image you thought everyone expected from you was never the person you actually wanted to be. It was simply the mask that felt safe to wear. At some point, you stopped taking it off. And you started calling that mask "who I am."

I have lived that life myself.

Underneath a surface that looked fine, I was completely worn down.

It was easier not to think about anything.

So I filled myself up with busyness, scrolling, numbness.

I packed my schedule to the brim so I wouldn't have to think. A calendar full of plans was the perfect escape from time spent thinking. And on the days I had nothing planned, I stayed glued to my phone instead, scrolling all day through a timeline full of other people's success.

And I buried my feelings so deep that even I couldn't find them.

You were conditioned into this. At school, at work, through the media, even through other people's social media, you were quietly taught what you were "supposed to be" until you believed it without noticing. Somewhere along the way, someone handed you a mask, and you put it on without realizing it.

You're still putting things off. Again and again, you've watched people who started later than you calmly pass you by in the very field you wanted for yourself. They never built a mask, so they never had to spend years tearing one off.

Do you want to know what's actually stopping you?

It's the fear of how others will see you once you stop performing.

If you followed that fear of how others see you all the way to the end, what would actually happen?

They judge you? They talk about you? Does the world end?

No. The fear of being seen honestly is an illusion you created yourself. No one remembers your most embarrassing moment the way you do. Everyone is too busy with their own lives to spend time watching your mask.

Stop giving up on what you truly want to do just because you're worried about appearances. It doesn't have to match the career you've built. It doesn't have to match the image you think people expect from you. You already know that something about the life you're performing doesn't feel right. You don't have to give up on being honest with yourself.

Leave the noise behind.
